A transportation organization operating in a demanding service environment

UNTRR is the National Union of Road Hauliers from Romania, a long-established professional organization representing the interests of road transport operators. Alongside its broader activity, UNTRR runs digital services used by customers who need to issue and manage road and bridge taxes quickly and reliably.

As usage needs evolved, the requirement was not only to improve an old platform, but to create a more modern product environment capable of supporting customers on the move, internal operational teams, and external partners reselling the service.

Modernizing a live platform without compromising day-to-day operations

The challenge was not simply to redesign an outdated application. The real need was to modernize a business-critical platform already used in real operational conditions, while also extending its capabilities for future growth.

This meant dealing with several layers of complexity at once: a legacy platform with performance, design, and usability issues; a large backlog of new features that had become difficult to implement efficiently; multiple services running on separate domains that needed to be unified; mobile access requirements for users frequently on the road; and a high-stakes operational context where heavy traffic and service continuity were essential.

The project required more than implementation capacity. It required a structured modernization effort that combined architecture decisions, product thinking, delivery coordination, and long-term support.

A modernized web and mobile platform built around operational continuity

We worked with UNTRR to create a new version of the platform that preserved core services, improved the user experience, and expanded the product with capabilities better suited to current customer and business needs.

Customer web application

A responsive single-page application designed to make road tax and bridge tax issuing faster, clearer, and easier to use.

Back-office platform

A secure internal environment where the operational team can manage orders, customers, and performance-related reporting.

Mobile application

A mobile experience for Android and iOS, created to give hauliers access to the same core platform capabilities while on the road.

Partner API

A modern REST API supporting external applications and partners that resell the platform's services.

Key operational capabilities

Vehicle data storage, fleet import, tax validity checks, payment by card or payment order, and instant delivery by email or SMS.

End-to-end involvement across modernization, delivery, and ongoing support

Our involvement covered the core areas needed to move the project from legacy constraints to a maintainable and extensible product.

  • Technical consultancy and architectural direction
  • Business and functional analysis
  • UX/UI design collaboration
  • Frontend and backend engineering
  • Mobile application development
  • Partner API design and documentation
  • QA and validation
  • Agile delivery coordination
  • Maintenance and long-term support

Built through a phased and agile delivery model

We approached the project as a long-term modernization effort rather than a one-off rebuild. The work started with consultancy and solution planning, followed by dedicated delivery across design, engineering, QA, and iteration.

This helped us align architecture and product decisions early, deliver improvements in manageable phases, support both modernization and new feature development, maintain continuity in a live operational platform, and provide ongoing support as the product continued to evolve.

The delivery model combined cross-functional collaboration with Agile ways of working, including sprint planning, regular reviews, and close coordination between product and technical stakeholders.

A strong example of modernization for a high-traffic operational platform

This project reflects the kind of work we are especially well suited for: modernizing software that supports real operations, serves live users, and cannot afford instability.

What makes it especially relevant is the combination of legacy modernization in an already active product, high-traffic and mission-critical service flows, customer, internal, and partner-facing product layers, web, mobile, backend, and API delivery in one coordinated effort, and long-term ownership beyond the initial launch.

For us, this is more than a transportation case study. It is a strong example of how we help clients modernize important platforms without losing sight of usability, reliability, and operational continuity.

What the engagement delivered

  • A modernized platform replacing legacy constraints with a more maintainable product foundation
  • A unified environment for services that had previously been split across different domains
  • Improved digital experience for customers issuing road and bridge taxes
  • Mobile access for users who need the platform in real-world travel conditions
  • Better support for internal operations and partner integrations
  • Long-term delivery continuity through an ongoing collaboration model

Client feedback
